songs without names
Songs Without Names is the first solo exhibition of work by Matthew James Kay. The exhibition comprises a collection of new sculptural works inspired by a collection of unnamed songs (download from here) by the artist exploring the co-existence of wholeness and brokenness, sadness and joy and their interdependence. From an array of found, discarded objects Kay assembles sculptures that evidence lives passed, passing and becoming. In each piece is apparent the process of it's making, signs of wear, things lost and things gained, a process of restoration through which the objects gain new life and value. The works, arranged in clusters of individual works share their meanings with each other, creating dialogue between and within the works. These inclusive communities of sculptures are at once whimsical and weighty, their quirky appearances belying a metaphorical engagement with notions of unconditional love and the inherent worth of personhood.
